Psychopathy Within offers a new way of conceptualizing and defining psychopathy that is a convergence of the author's divergent professional experiences as a forensic psychologist and a Jungian-oriented psychotherapist and her personal life experiences over decades as a Jungian student and analysand.

When her father died, the story of his life and their relationship ignited her curiosity about the meaning of psychopathy, enriching and amplifying what she already felt she knew from a wide range of experiences, study, and observations. The result is an invitation to explore this charged topic, psychopathy, with a new perspective that holds the potential for growth and healing. At the heart of the story is the power of eros- the devastating ramifications of its absence and the tremendous healing energy of its presence.

Psychopathy Within eBook Eve Maram

If you are interested in the subject of psychopathy you should read this book. The author talks about her childhood and how her relationship with her father lead her to the field of psychopathy. She goes into great detail about her father's life and how his actions lead to his being called a psychopath by more than one of his five wives. But his being a psychopath is not what we normally think of as a psychopath (at least not this reader). Most people think of psychopaths as being violent offenders, but psychopathy has a broader range of descriptors and the author details those other descriptors in this book. This is not the type of book where you sit down by a warm fire and escape, but it is the type of book that makes you think. If you want to know the technicalities of psychopathy with a bit of a story thrown in, then I recommend this book.

Psychopathy Within eBook Eve Maram Reviews

There was a lot of interesting information in this book. I did have a hard time making it through the first 2 chapters, but only because I felt these were the chapters the author was coming to terms with her issues and working on her self healing. Great for her, but kind of boring for me.
It was interesting learning of some of these notions on psychopathy. One of which is that psychopaths are a "subgroup of humans", an evolutionary change for species survival.(interesting thought) Very thought provoking read on how we look at others and compare them to known others and even self.
I also liked how the author pointed out the "flatness" of electronic media. People may not be able to afford food or education, but can sure have a phone for texts and internet. Allowing for the spread of un-informed opinions through the masses causing unnecessary hysteria. In short this book reminds us that we're all crazy but at varying degrees. It's the ones at the far end of the scope you gotta watch out for.
In Psychopathy Withing, Maram, a forensic psychologist, combines Jungian theory, research, case studies, and her own personal experiences to call for and craft a more nuanced understanding of psychopathy. She believes that looking at psychopathy as a dichotomy, as a personality that is completely broken from a normative, healthy personality, creates a false understanding of the true fluidity that can be found in people’s behaviors. In her words ‘by integrating several approaches to the concept of psychopath,’ Maram works to ‘conceptualize the term along a gradient.’ Maram ties the need for a deeper understanding of psychopathy to gaining a better understanding of human personality as a whole. Her personal relationship with her father, a man who did not exhibit the extremes of violence often associated with pychopathy but was remote and ‘cold’, fuels her own view that psychopathic traits are more prevalent than we would like to think, and that having a more fluid and less judgmental concept of the personality type can lead to better understanding and treatment. I found her ideas and writing insightful and I think she makes a strong case that having a more nuanced understanding of psychopathic behavior can be useful.
This book was a little difficult to understand sometimes and is not something to read for leisure but instead to grasp a better understanding of the descriptions of a psychopath. I found most of the book interesting. Some because it was what I expected from my limited television experience and some because Maram talked about psychopathy in different terms than normally thought. I like books better when I know there is a personal story behind the reason for writing the book and Maram gave the readers her personal experience, her insight into psychopathy. I think that this gave the book extra humanized credibility. I would recommend this book for a descriptive book, report book, or for students studying psychology and anything related. However, if you are looking for something to sit and read to enjoy this is probably not the book for you.
Psychopath is a word I remember using from even when I was school aged. At the time I am not sure if I knew the exact meaning but throughout my schooling I came to understand what it meant. Psychopathy Within by Eve Maram is a book about the author's own personal experience as both a psychologist and a child of a psychologically disturbed parent. The book got off to a slow start, which was more about the author coming to realize what exactly has happened in her life. I found myself drawn to later in the book where we go back in time and see Eve as a child. Eve not only studied and lived this as a professional, but she also experienced it first hand. Being drawn to many forensic and psychologically driven television shows, I was easily hooked. Ms. Maram does a great job of explaining psychopathy as well as relating it to real life events.
I'll be honest. Before I read this book, I though a psychopath was a violent, mentally disturbed individual like you see on television crime dramas. Boy, were my eyes opened! Dr. Maram draws on her experience in forensics and psychology to clinically describes psychopathy to the reader. Then, she adds in elements of her personal experience with her father and how he inspired her to enter this field. I am inspired by the author's dedication and detail to the topics. I found this to be a fascinating representation of a mental health issue that I had put into a little box. I tend to think of myself as open minded already, but this book made me more so. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in how the brain and personalities work. A delicate balance of professional and personal engages the reader and opens them up to this topic. Well done!
