Love Of Cooking 4th of July Love of Cooking Holiday Series edition by Maggie Brooks Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews

Made the chedder & bacon stuffed burger today for lunch and man was that good. Going to make them up for Fathers Day when everybody gets together.
No need to wonder what to serve at your holiday barbecue - there's a nice selection of everyone's favorites in this delightful book, many with a new twist. Thumb through the book and create your menu by picking out what you like - even homemade ice cream. Highly recommended.
When I found this cookbook back in June I was determined to make a recipe for the 4th of July. So the recipe I made today was the Classic Cheese Ball although I adapted it to make a miniature cheese ball. I used 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 2 ounces Neufchatel cheese, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, 1 clove garlic, 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and 1/8 teaspoon paprika. I mixed that all up in a bowl and then rolled the cheese ball in chopped pecans. It was actually really good. I left out the spicy ingredients. Other recipes in this cookbook that I want to try include Blue Cheese Dip, Golden Potato Salad, Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and Peach Cobbler. There are also a few drink recipes for punch but I have never seen family sized tea bags so I probably won't try the ice tea recipe. It would have been helpful if the authors had given the equivalent of regular sized tea bags. Other than that this looks like a great cookbook.

There is a total of 25 recipes including Snacks & Drinks, Salads & Sides, Main Dishes and Desserts. The formatting is nice - I especially like the "return to table of contents" link on each recipe. SCORE! Unfortunately, most of the recipes are pretty simple, high in sugar, low on spices.

The Zesty Grilled Chicken is simply boneless, skinless chicken breasts and a bottle of Italian Dressing. The recipe has been featured in Kraft advertising for at least 20 years.

The Kickin' Party Mix sounds horrid. Oyster crackers, Cheez-Its, roasted peanuts and pretzels mixed with two packages of ranch dressing mix and two cups of canola oil, then left to soak up the oil for two and a half hours.

Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies calls for margarine, as do Candy-Filled Brownies. Apparently they didn't get the memo about the margarine.

The Easy Pulled Pork and the Joann's Brisket sound interesting. I'm pretty picky about both of those things, and I smoke them which is a very time-consuming job. However, the authors make the point that both of these dishes can be cooked ahead of time, the pork in a slow-cooker and the brisket in the oven, and won't take up room on the grill when it is needed for other things. I can see how helpful that would be for a large gathering.

The Peach Cobbler recipe called for two cups of fresh peaches, and a total of two cups of sugar. To me that sounds like an awful lot of sugar for that dessert.

The Spiced Tea Punch sounds pretty good, and the Red, White & Bleu Chip Dip sounds delicious.

There are no pictures and no nutritional information but most of the recipes have reasonably clear instructions.
Once I saw that Maggie Brooks penned another cookbook I HAD to have it, as I have all of her other cookbooks as well. I was not disappointed, this book has some awesome recipes that I'm planning on using for 4th of July celebration and summer barbeques. The cookbook is organized into easy to find categories that are linked back to the table of contents (which is also clickable) so it's super easy to find what you want and get to cooking. I've already tried the Red, White & Bleu dip which was AMAZING and a great twist on simple onion dip. I'm going to try the pulled pork for my father on Father's Day, since he loves barbeque and I expect that will be tasty as well!
Just in time for Independence Day menu planning, Maggie Brooks' Love of Cooking recipes will make your celebration a gathering to remember. Happily...this book is navigable (unlike many recipe books!) and well laid out in four categories 1) SNACKS & DRINKS, 2) SALADS & SIDES, 3) MAIN DISHES and 4) DESSERTS. Including Mag's most favorite recipe from each category, there are also new yummy sounding recipes to try including RED, WHITE & BLEU CHIP DIP, BLACK & WHITE BEAN SALAD, NOT YOUR GRANDMA'S COLE SLAW, ZESTY GRILLED CHICKEN, 4th OF JULY FLAGS for dessert, and more. This is definitely a set of celebration worthy recipes, and I can't wait to start pre-holiday sampling!
