The tour of the world in eighty days Jules Verne 9781172300297 Books

The very title 'Around the World in Eighty Days' (1873) is iconic and imagination-capturing. Both the title, and Verne's concept of circumnavigating the globe in record time, continue to inspire adaptations, as well as influencing continuing attempts by present-day adventurers to emulate the exploits of Phileas Fogg and his trusty valet, Jean Passepartout. Michael Palin is one of the most recent examples of a contemporary globetrotter in the lineage of Verne's hero, Fogg. Palin's TV series documents his travels.

This novel is, in sum, one of Jules Verne's most enjoyable and best-loved 'Extraordinary Journeys'. However, this particular translation from the original French, into English, by the American translator, Stephen W. White, has undeservedly passed into oblivion.

Though many early English translations of Verne's novels are riddled with inaccuracies ('howlers'), White's rendering is one of the honourable exceptions. It deserves to be rediscovered and read, for its originality within the long chain of English-language renderings; its language is formal, and faithful to Verne's style, and imitative of the French syntax and lexis, while also being couched in natural and coherent English.

White's imitative approach is evident from the title alone viz. 'The Tour of the World ...', rather than the more common 'Around the World ...'. White was a stenographer and legal translator, and, given that legal translation has generally tended to be imitative and, of course, accurate, White's forays into literary translation have tended to betray his legal translating background, which has positively impacted on his precise rendering of this Verne novel.

The Choptank Press, Missouri, is working on a republication of the White translation, and this forthcoming edition will include articles on White and on this particular version of '80 Days', written by Verne scholars Dr Norman Wolcott (USA) and Dr Kieran O'Driscoll (Dublin City University, Ireland).
